Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Directed by Rob Marshall, Starring Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, and Geoffery Rush

Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) crosses paths with a woman from his past (Cruz), and he’s not sure if it’s love — or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.

The Verdict:

Pirates of the Caribbean and the Curse of the Black Pearl was an extremely entertaining movie. The sequel, Dead Man’s Chest, while possessing a convoluted plot, was still an extremely fun movie that created a fantastic villan and still had much of the great action, twists, and humor that was in the first. The third movie, At World’s End, was way too long and had an even more self-contradicting storyline and the awful Calypso subplot, and yet it still maintained some great fun. This fourth movie in the series is not at all close to the original, or even the sequel in terms of quality.

The main problem with the movie is that it isn’t enough fun. This is a serious problem when you are watching a movie that is a good bit over two hours long. The plot is very unfocused and it never seems to come together. There are no surprises or anything of twists that the previous three Pirates movies had.

Jack Sparrow and Barbossa are the only characters worth anything and none of the other characters really matter or have all that much to do. Ian McShane, while a brilliant actor, has almost nothing he has to do as Blackbeard. This villan is not imposing at all and cannot be compared to Davy Jones. Penelope Cruz is ok, but again she doesn’t have very much to do. Her character has no quirks and doesn’t develop at all. This is another problem– absolutely zero character development. None of the characters change at all and it makes them all pretty dull.

The film does have a couple good action scenes and Captain Jack and Barbossa are still awesome together but it doesn’t save the rest of the movie. It’s just sporadic fun and it’s not as consistent as the previous movies. I’m still a huge fan of this series and I hope that the next movie will be much better (yes the 5th movie is already being made).
